Last year, during a girl’s night sleepover, we decided to watch the movie Mother! After we watched this movie, I had never felt that scared or confused in my life. The movie was full of mind tripping scenes and violent and disturbing situations that added to the story. In the movie, I was drawn in by Veronica’s curiosity about her husband and about the many people who were coming into her home. I was drawn in by the insanity that Man and Woman brought into the house. They brought in the unknown and that made the story more intriguing to watch. The character Him wasn’t very entertaining to watch in the film. He was always trying to push his wife out of the way to get closer with the strangers, or if he was with his wife, he didn’t make her feel important. At the same time, you don’t know what he is really feeling. You see him being rude towards his loved ones, but don’t really know how his mind is working. In my adaptation, I would like to go more into depth in his thoughts and reasons why he does things. I would like to write about how he may not be the bad guy we all think he is. I want to make my adaptation more psychological so it’ll make you really think about what is happening, and it will get you to question what you read. I want to keep the same story, but change the whole perspective of the story by making Him that character we are feeling for and understanding.
Annotated Bibliography
“Mother! Explained: What on Earth Is That Yellow Potion and Who Are Domhnall and Brian Gleeson?”
This articles main point is to show that the movie is mainly all about the Bible. When you first start the movie, you really don’t understand it, and you don’t understand why nobody has a name. This article explains who each person is, and what they represent. When in the article, the creator Adam White states,
“It depicts the rape and torment of Mother Earth,” she said. “It’s not for everybody. It’s a hard film to watch. But it’s important for people to understand the allegory we intended. That they know I represent Mother Earth, Javier, whose character is a poet, represents a form of God, a creator; Michelle Pfeiffer is an Eve to Ed Harris’s Adam, there’s Cain and Abel and the setting sometimes resembles the Garden of Eden.
In my project, I will combine the theory of the Bible throughout my adaptation to explain why which characters are doing what they do.
La Dolce Morte: Vernacular Cinema and the Italian Giallo Film *
This article isn’t about Mother itself, but another movie. It really focuses on the horror genre itself, so it drew me in. This article shows that horror is really drawn in from all the extra elements like music and props rather that characters. Like Richard J. Hand says,
“like other populist genres of horror in the performance media, seem to be on a mission to outdo their immediate predecessors and rivals by finding increasingly novel and audacious methods of murder.” This shows that you have to find other ways to enhance a movie to make it more entertaining.
Mother!': WTF Is Going on with Darren Aronofsky's WTF Movie?
In this write up, they are talking about a new theory of the movie, which is creation. It is about how one person can do so much, but if they make one wrong movie, they can destroy their whole life or reputation. Like Matt Goldberg says, “One reading sees mother! as a story about creation, looking at the Poet as a stand in for all artists and the double-edged sword about the need to create and the destruction that a work can wreak when it’s released to the public.” I am going to use the idea of destruction in my adaptation to show how each character messes up their life in their own way.
100 Bible Verses about Adam And Eve
This isn’t a normal article about the movie, but quotes from a story in the Bible. The story of Adam and Eve is about man and woman, and how woman were blamed for sin. In the movie Mother, Veronica was blamed for the husbands misery. In this source, the author says,
And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
This shows that God gave them everything, and still, they were both given misery for something one person did. I would show in my adaptation the man causing the wrong for once.
Darren Aronofsky's Virtuosic 'Mother!' Will Make Your Head Explode.
In this source, it shows you that your society is a not a good place, and that we as humans are definitely not helping it. In the movie, we are shown many societal issues, and most to all are done by humans themselves to the earth. Like Peter Travers says, “Darren Aronofsky doesn’t make movies to help you feel better about yourself and the world.” This shows that we are the cause of most to societies problems, and I am going to show that in my adaptation so we can try and make a difference in these problems.
Horror Movies with Mom *
In this article, it really describes how you feel which watching a horror movie, and how they really stay with you through life. Mother really stayed with you and made you think. Just like Michael A. Chaney says,
They've got spells in the dissolve shots. Ghosts melt into your house as you watch. They hide under the bed and wait. They will come for you on the stairs. You knew this would happen. You even imagined it yourself, how it'd be. Were you to die, you'd want to be the demon behind that door, reaching through the balusters for any who dare to pass.
All of these scenes add to a horror story, and I really want to involve that into my adaptation.
